DAX-Sports catalogue

DAX-Sports chose judo competition photos from David Finch to illustrate a large part of the judo section to their recent 70 page martial arts partner catalogue. The catalogue is aimed at the German, Austrian and East European partner markets and includes Finch photos on the back, front and inside pages of German world champion Florian Wanner winning his Osaka gold medal in spectacular style. DAX-Sports are sponsors of Florian Wanner.

Birthday of Marc Alexandre and Jimmy Pedro

Consistently France is falling behind in Olympic judo. With a base of over 600,000 active players they have vied with Japan for the top spot at several Games and still stand  second overall with 10 golds since 1964, even though they missed gold in Athens. The last time they fell short of a champion was in '84 at Los Angeles.Marc Alexandre FRA and his uchi-mata

A previous French Olympic champion is 7th dan Marc Alexandre whose 45th birthday it is today. He won the 71 kgs gold medal at Seoul in 1988 and since 1991 he has been a respected national trainer. Recently the French Judo Federation promoted him to work at their colossal INSEP national dojo. Born in Paris he started judo at the age of 6 and belongs to the famous U.S. Orleans club that has nurtured many world champions including Catherine Arnaud, Fabien Canu and Stephan Traineau. Traineau is the current French team manager that is under pressure for the poor results at Athens. Could there be plans afoot to bring Marc Alexandre into the top echelons of the disappointing French team's management?

One of the countries that, for its size, consistently under performs at the Olympic Games is the United States. They have 3 silver medals to their credit and 5 bronze medals that was increased to 6 at Athens when Jimmy "Peanuts" Pedro won the bronze medal in the 73 kgs division. He had officially 'retired' after just missing a medal at Sydney with his fifth place but made his comeback in 2003 to be the oldest at Athens to win a medal. It was his second bronze at his fourth try. Today he celebrates his 34th birthday.

Pedro won the the 73 kgs World title in 1999 at Birmingham, England. It was at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics where he was working that he was determined to make a comeback when he saw fellow American Derek Parra win the 1,500 m speed skating gold medal. "It was inspiring to me," Pedro said. "As a athlete watching other athletes, I knew what they went through to be there. It motivated me to want to do it one last time."

In preparation for Athens Pedro won 66 matches including beating the eventual winner Won Hee Lee KOR on his home ground. Unfortunately, in Athens, he was drawn on the same side as Lee. If he had been in the opposite pool he might have retired with a silver, but we'll never know.
